Interesting Postcard

The postcard I chose to discuss is entitled "Going to the Sun". It was sent from Cone Chevrolet in Southern California to one of their customers back in 1962. The card informs the car owner that it has been 30 days since the car was last worked on and my need to be taken back in for routine service. It seems pretty routine of a company to alert their customers when their might needs some upkeep; I remember getting postcards from the dentist saying that I needed to come in for a cleaning - its the same idea. What really drew me to this card though was the contradictory picture on the front of the card. It is a valley within the mountains with a small road passing through. Its such a beautiful, serene snapshot of the natural, untouched world, yet here it is reminding a driver to bring their car in for service. I just find it funny how contradicting the two ideas are. On one hand, there is a depiction of huge mountains and valleys, and then on the other hand, it talks about manmade motor vehicles. In my eyes, the juxtaposition of the two are simply comical. What I understand is that Chevy cares enough about their customers to send out individual, handwritten reminders to each of their buyers. It also doesn't hurt the company's reputation, or their wallet, for that matter. For a postcard that is over 50 years old, it remains in good shape and you can tell it has been preserved well. The only sign of age is the yellow discoloring of the card itself. I think the postcard will pop back into my head someday and still make me laugh.
